1) If you really want to be good team leader, you should be more of a follower first...Be with your team and not over them. Make them feel your presence as a team and not as a boss. Its only then the members of your team feel free to reach out to you when they any face any/many challenging situations or task.

2) Give them the space-Your team members require the space to think and perform rather than put your own thoughts on the way it needs to be performed.  Respect the team members' individuality, understand that they have their own way of accomplishing the task as required.  If any time they may go off-ride, you still have the chance to guide them out of it rather than holding a gun to their head.

3) Communication: You Team needs proper briefing and communication on a regular basis to understand the importance of any task that is required to be completed within a stipulated time. Carry them along as they would understand the importance of the task and put in necessary effort accordingly.

4) Recognition: Once your team member(s) achieve the stated goal, appreciate them wholeheartedly. Recall the efforts they invested in accomplishing the task and reward them. Make them feel valuable.  They will never leave you and strive more to be better in their respective work.

3. Cheerleader - who better that you to cheer your team and take their success story to the world. Understand what motivates your team and reward them. Be their Apostle.

4. Coach - Be fair, be firm, give feedback, coach and mentor and genuinely care for the growth of each and every team member.

Take a class on leadership and management or other courses that focus on the functional skills you lack. Find a good in-person class in your region that focuses on skills such as delegation, difficult conversations and project timelines. Also, look for mentor in your organization who can give you some guidance.

The best managers I have known are the ones who have:
1. Vision: They asses their weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly goals and communicate the goals to their team members.
2. Industry Expertise: They are constantly reading books/ articles/ blogs etc. to keep themselves updated on their industry knowledge.
3. The ability to Lead: They have the mindset of a leader and can lead from the front. (You could undergo leadership training programs to get better at this).
4. Powerful communication skills: They are skillful with words and know what to say and when to filter things out.
