My manager always advises using your head in decision making at work, but often my gut feeling and thinking from the heart has lead to great progress on client projects. Which is better and a smarter thing to do?

Happy and safe day to you Paulina Joseph,

In recent years people have moved away from gut feeling process to data driven process. Gut feeling decision making is subjective. If the client asks you how did you come out with this decision you will not be able to explain clearly. If the solution is right then your decision is good if not then you need to answer both your employer and the client which will be difficult to explain.

Data based decision is clear to explain, why you had taken the decision. All data based decision need not be correct but there is an opportunity to assess where you had gone wrong and whether you can take corrective actions in course of time. Data based decisions helps you to explain the basis of your decision, which will help your superior to assess and give you guidance.

When you grow up in organization ladder you need to take more decisions and if those decisions are data based decisions you can explain to both your seniors and Juniors your intent clearly.

In my view data based decisions are more effective and a smarter way to bring a solution.

Wishing you most and more

Raghupathy

For me, following my heart worked and I quit my job to follow my passion. but I guess some decisions you have to think objectively so it depends.
