Hello Parichay..The last the way we work has undergone a sea change… lines between our personal and professional lives are blurring. Unless you are able to create some boundary around each of these, life can be quite stressful. Here are a few tips to help build these boundaries

1.Understanding self – Before defining the boundaries it is important for you to understand what are things you enjoy doing, what works you up. What is that you don’t want to compromise etc. Once you have a clarity on this it will be easy for you to build a plan of do’s and don’ts.

2. Create a frame – Create a clear structure as to how you would like your colleagues or family members interact during working hours. Clearly demarcate work time and personal time. Inform you team members and manager as to when you will be available. This can also involve (if you are working from office) defining your personal frame too (like you may not be comfortable with physical interaction even if casual).

3.Communicate – Once you have your framework in place, communicate upfront to all involved. There is no question of over communication. Try and keep these conversations on a one on one basis. Keep the communication simple and pleasant.

4.Saying No – It is never very easy to say NO. However you will need to learn to say NO. You may be already overworked and if a new assignment is pushed down to you, if you are unable to say no you may be messing up all the assignment. By saying No you should not feel guilty either as you are sure that you are doing your work well. However it is important to not say it in a very aggressive manner. But rather say it in a which the other person understands your situation.

5. Technology to your help – If you are used to using your calendar for managing you schedule make sure it is always updated. Do not accept conflicting invites or schedules and finally remember to block some time for yourself periodically.

So by setting your boundaries you will be able to build a better work environment and perform better.
